The Electronics International Black Box Data Recorder (MUX-8A) is one of the most sophisticated data recorders available for general aviation aircraft. Although it was designed to be used with E.I.'s Ultimate Bar Graph Engine Analyzer model UBG-16, the MUX-8A is capable of recording data from up to seven of any E.I. instruments and one GPS instrument.

The MUX-8A has three Storage Time Interval settings (1, 3 and 6 minutes). Also, it can be put into the "BURST" mode at any time to record data every 5 seconds. This feature is exceptionally useful when you suspect an engine problem. When the MUX-8A is connected to the UBG-16 it will record up to 690 hours of data at a six-minute rate, 345 hours at a three-minute rate or 115 hours at a one-minute rate. Also, the MUX-8A has an Event Warning Line that can be used to record data the moment your engine exceeds a high or low limit.

When a new engine is installed in your aircraft or a repair is performed on your existing engine and something goes wrong, you may find yourself in an argument about who's at fault. The installer and engine rebuilder may claim it's your fault. They may believe the EGT's and/or CHT's were operated over temperature (possibly by leaning the engine during takeoff and climb with the cowl flap closed). You know better. But can you prove it? By recording your engine's and aircraft's operating parameters with the MUX-8A you have a permanent record to use as proof of how your engine has been operated. In addition, you can probably spot just when the problem showed up. In this type of situation, the MUX-8A could save you thousands of dollars.
