JPI recently stated on a Comparison Chart posted on its website that the chart was created . . . "to counter numerous intentionally false claims being made by our competition." We are offended by such a misleading and malicious attack on our integrity (JPI could only have meant Electronics International and/or Insight Corporation, since ours were the only two "competitors" listed). We are as dedicated to running our business with honesty and decency as we are to providing some of the highest quality instruments possible in general aviation,

We have contacted JPI many times over a course of several years, requesting them to be more accurate and less misleading in its statements, graphs and demonstrations regarding our products. There has been little or no success in those attempts. The one time a JPI modification was brought to our attention, we upgraded our information immediately to maintain accuracy. We are so committed to operating our business with honesty that nothing JPI could have said or done would have made us more indignant than its deceptive statement on its Comparison Chart. We hope our commitment to operating our business with honor and honesty and our twenty-year reputation in general aviation as a company of integrity and caring will speak for itself to our potential customers.

It is sometimes difficult and often confusing for us to understand JPI’s instrument claims (e.g., a recent JPI website Comparison Chart claims 43 alarms for its EDM, yet JPI’s Manual lists only 10 alarms), we have therefore produced the following Comparison Chart by taking information and claims only from each company’s instrument manuals.

Normalized Mode with Long-Term Memory for detecting trends and evolving problems Yes.    Compares current engine performance for each cylinder with engine performance during previous flights. No.    Normalized mode only compares temperatures from the moment you entered the Normalized mode. Once you exit that mode, the information is lost.
True Peak Detection Yes.     The UBG-16 will automatically return to the "LEAN" mode as you continue to lean if a false peak is detected. No.    The JPI's EDM locks onto the first temperature drop, which could be a false peak.

Independent Resolution for the EGT Columns (the finer the segment resolution, the more accurate the information).

Yes.    EGT columns can be scaled to any temperature range to accommodate any engine, (For example, if the top segment is set for 1650 degrees F. and the bottom segment is set for 1250 degrees F., the segment resolution will be +/- 20 degrees F.)

No.    The resolution is dependent on the high TIT limit. The bottom segment is factory set to 50% of the top segment. (For example, if the high TIT limit is 1650 degrees F, then the bottom segment will be 825 degrees F, which makes the segment resolution +/- 43 degrees F per bar.)

Yes, up to 690 hours by adding EI’s Black Box Data Recorder ($395.00 retail). Also, GPS and data from six other instruments can be recorded at the same time. The Black Box Data Recorder can be purchased when purchasing the UBG-16 or can be added at a later date, without returning the instrument to the factory.
