To Our Customers:
Let us first apologize that you, our customer, must again be confronted with the petty issues that we find ourselves being forced to deal with on a daily basis. We would prefer to simply sell our products in peace and let our competitors do the same, but we have yet again been forced to respond to defamatory claims made by our competition. In spite of the fact that we've requested JPI to remove false statements regarding our product, they continue to persist. It is interesting that we have NEVER had similar issues with ANY other competitor, and in fact we have enjoyed friendly banter with all of our competitors, except JPI. We are confident that the superiority of our products is abundantly clear when compared to JPI's, so we don't feel the need to sling mud in their direction by inundating you with page upon page of complaining, as they have felt it necessary to do on their website, as well as in their ads against us. Instead, we will let the unparalled quality of our products and customer service, along with the comparison provided below, speak for themselves.
Thank you so much,
Electronics International

EI UBG-16 |
JPI EDM-700/800 |
Case Depth |
Standard UBG-16 = 6.25" Deep, including wires at back of case.
Remote Mount UBG-16 = 2" Deep, including connector and wires at back of case. Remote Mount option is an additional $100. |
9.1" Deep, including the connector and wire at the back of case. |
| Stable 1 Degree Resolution |
Absolutely. This stable precision is a trademark of EI products. |
According to JPI's own manual, may need to be set from 1 degree resolution to 10 degree resolution to eliminate jumpy readings. |
| Segments per bar graph column - A larger number means a better resolution of the bar graph. |

| Ease of Use |
Incredibly easy - Dual position toggle switches provide four directional inputs, making for intuitive operations, EI is known industry wide for providing super-easy programming and operation.
|
Debatable - single position buttons make for awkward button pushing schemes, such as double-tapping one button in an effort to gain more than two inputs on the face of the instrument. |
| Ungrounded Probes |
Yes - Ungrounded probes eliminate jumpy readings related to ground loops, as found in grounded probes. EI handcrafts every probe at their factory in Oregon to ensure their customers receive only the highest level of quality. It is more expensive to manufacture ungrounded probes, but we feel the higher accuracy and reliability are worth it.
|
NO - JPI uses grounded probes to measure Engine temps. Grounded probes can create ground loops, which can cause jumpy readings. This may be one reason JPI encourages pilots to set the EDM's resolution to 10 degrees. Also, grounding the tip of the probe can overtime create a thermal failure point. |
| Normalized Mode with multiple trip trend analysis |
Yes. The UBG-16's Normalize Mode analyzes engine data over the course of several flights, which makes it possible to catch most problems many flight hours before they become a hazard. |
No. The EDM's Normalize Mode with "Long Term" memory simply remembers data over the course of one flight, instead of monitoring trends occurring over the course of several flights. |
| True Peak Detection |
Yes. If a false peak is detected, the UBG-16 will automatically return to the "LEAN" Mode as you continue to lean your engine. |
No. The EDM will lock onto the first temperature to drop, which can sometimes be a false peak. |

Adjustable Sampling Rate for Data Recording |
Yes. To extend the amount of time recorded, the MUX-8A can be set to take "snapshots" of instrument data every six minutes, three minutes, one minute or in "burst mode" as fast as it can. Once a redline situation is encountered, the MUX-8A automatically takes engine snapshots at the rate of once every one minute. |
